Robert A Smith

Robert A. Smith, 61, of Port Huron, died Friday, February 27, 2015, in the Cleveland Clinic with his family at his side.

He was born April 22, 1953 in Port Huron to the late Gerald E. and Vivian L. (Leslie) Smith. He married his soulmate, Mary Jo Quinn on March 13, 1976 in Chicago, IL

Bob was a 1971 graduate of Port Huron Catholic High School. He played hockey for the University of Illinois - Chicago Circle where he was a two-time All American and went on to play for the Waterloo Blackhawks. Bob earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan, Flint and a master’s degree and educational specialist degree from Wayne State University. He taught in the Port Huron Area School District, was a principal at Memphis High School and was extremely proud to end his career as principal at Indian Hills Elementary School in Romeo.

Bob was an avid sports fan and is a member of the Port Huron Sports Hall of Fame for his hockey accomplishments. He was active in the Port Huron Minor Hockey Refereeing Association. Bob enjoyed relaxing at this cottage and made life-long memories with family and friends. He was a longtime member of St. Mary Catholic Church. Above all else Bob was the most loving husband, father and “boompa” to his two grandsons.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Jo; daughters, Bobbi Jo (Jeremy) Stoner of Richland, MI and Michelle Smith of Holland; son Brian Smith of Port Huron and grandchildren, Trent and Brady Stoner; sister, Renie Shannon of Fort Gratiot; sisters-in-law, Vicki Smith of Cookville, TN, Janet Smith of Port Huron, Kathy Kiesgen of Waukesha, WI, Barbara Quinn of Elmhurst, IL; brother-in-law, Kevin Quinn of Weeki-Wachee, FL; sisters-in-law, Barbara (Michael) Brennan of Chicago, IL, Caren (Thomas) Bazarek of Park Ridge, IL, Patricia ( Richard) Olson of Chicago, IL and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Craig and Leslie Smith.

Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 4, 2015 in St. Mary Catholic Church. The Reverend Zbigniew Zomerfeld will officiate.

Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.

Visiting hours will be 3-9pm Tuesday, March 3, 2015 in the Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home and 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church. A Rosary will be recited at 8:45pm Tuesday evening.
