Karen K. Coats

Karen K. Coats, 49, died Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at home surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with cancer. Karen was a talented artist and beloved sister and will be deeply missed.

She was born in Port Huron on June 30, 1960 to Thomas H. and M. Patricia (Delaney) Coats. One of eight siblings, she graduated from Port Huron High and earned an Associates degree from St. Clair County Community College.

Karen moved to Atlanta, Georgia in 1986 and graduated from the Art Institute of Atlanta. She worked as a graphic artist while in Atlanta and volunteered her time to various organizations including Hands Across Atlanta. She ran the Peachtree Road Race multiple times and participated in art groups while in Atlanta.

She is survived by her sisters and brother, Pamela (Scott) Patterson, Linda Coats, Jeffrey (Trina) Coats, Deborah (Robert) D'Alessandro, Denise (Leonard, Jr.) Brookins, Cynthia (Donald, Jr.) Isaac and Sandra (Gary) Bowman; nieces and nephews, Chad Coats, Thomas Patterson, Kathryn Coats, Anthony Bowman, Sara Coats, William Bowman, Michael Isaac, Timothy Coats and Cole Bowman; step-nieces, Sarah and Laura Isaac and Nicole Brookins; great nieces and nephew, Lilliana, Alexis and Chaise; aunts and uncles, Catherine Weber, Teresa Bennett, Dorothy Sterling, William (Laverne) Delaney, Patricia Delaney, Ella (Shirley) Curtis, Timothy (Carol Ruck) Coats, Richard (Karen) Coats, Lois Coats; many cousins and special friends Debra and Keith Wells.

Karen was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas & Patricia Coats.

Funeral services will be 10 am Monday in St. Joseph Catholic Church. The Rev. Joseph Gagnon will officiate. Burial will follow in Lakeside Cemetery.

Visiting hours are from 2-4 & 7-9 pm on Saturday and Sunday in the Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home. A scripture/rosary service will be held at 7 pm Saturday evening.

Pallbearers will be Scott Patterson, Robert D'Alessandro, Leonard Brookins, Jr., Donald Isaac, Jr., Gary Bowman, Dan Sterling, Chad Coats and Thomas Patterson.

Memorials may be given to Holy Trinity Parish or Mercy Hospice.
