Catherine "Bonnie" Kinert

September 8th, 1921 to July 27th, 2017

Catherine Bonetta “Bonnie” Kinert, 95, of Port Huron, left this earth on Thursday, July 27, 2017, peacefully and happily to be with her husband, Joseph, for eternity in Heaven.

Catherine “Bonnie” was born September 8, 1921, in Defiance, Ohio, to the late Daniel and Leona Ryan. She was the fourth daughter of a family of ten children.

She came to Port Huron by bus at the age of seventeen and joined the Powers Hamburg Stand, where she worked as a car hop. Dale Powers, owner at that time, was her second cousin.

Bonnie remembers while she was riding on the bus into Port Huron from Ohio, how beautiful it was. The river and lake were amazing and the ships were a sight to behold. She decided right then and there to make Port Huron, Michigan, her new home.

Bonnie met Joseph at the Powers Hamburg Stand (where he was a regular). They were married on August 30, 1941, and they had one daughter, Judy.

Bonnie loved all her friends she made in Port Huron and traveled back to Defiance, Ohio, on occasion to visit.

Bonnie and Joe had many good years with dear friends, enjoying their Sultan’s Dance Club and Pot Luck Club.

She was a parishioner of St. Mary Catholic Church, Port Huron and worked as the church secretary for 10 years. She was honored to be a volunteer for the Mercy Hospital Auxiliary and was a member of the League of Catholic Women. She enjoyed her bridge clubs, reading, walking and adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughter, Judy and “son-in-law” Joe who were blessed to have her home with them for six years.

She is survived by her beloved grandchildren, Stephen (Jodi) Smith, Thomas Smith, Sr., Sarah (David) Thornton and Mary (Charles) White; great-grandchildren, Zach Smith, Thomas Smith II, Spencer Smith and Madison Smith and their mother, Wendy Smith, David Thornton II, Elizabeth Thornton, Catherine Thornton and Cameron and Connor White; her two surviving sisters, Pat Stuckman and Jane Goltzene; and one surviving brother, William (Janet) Ryan; and many dear surviving nieces and nephews and their families. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph, and great-grandson, Nicholas Joseph Thornton.

Visitation will be 4-8 pm Tuesday in the Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home. A Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. in the funeral home.

Mrs. Kinert will lie in state at St. Mary Catholic Church, Port Huron, on Wednesday, August 2, 2017, from 10 a.m. until the time of the Celebration of Life Mass at 11 a.m. The Reverend Zbigniew Zomerfeld will officiate.

Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to St. Mary Catholic Church, Port Huron, Marwood Manor - Bridgeport Wing, or McLaren Hospice, Port Huron.
