Marguerite E. Mathews

February 23rd, 1924 to April 6th, 2018

Marguerite Elizabeth Mathews, 94, of Jeddo, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, April 6, 2018.

She was born February 23, 1924 in Port Huron to the late Phillip and Ruth Carrier. She married James A. Mathews Sr. on July 11, 1942 in Marysville. He preceded her in death on April 23, 2007.

Marguerite was a 1942 graduate of Port Huron High School and during World War II she was a “Rosie the Riveter.” She ran the concession stand for Fort Gratiot and was a volunteer for the Fort Gratiot PTA. She was a den mother for Cub Scout Pack 106 for many years and was kitchen chairwoman for the Salvation Army Golden Agers. She was a member of St. Edward on-the-Lake Catholic Church.

She is survived by three sons, Charles “Bud” (Barb) Mathews, Edward (Mary) Mathews and John (Lorie) Mathews; her daughter-in-law, Connie Mathews; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; her brother, Robert Carrier; two sisters-in-law, Verna Carrier and Helen Kirkendall; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sons, Richard and James Mathews Jr.; her sister, Dorothy Schneider; three brothers, Raymond, Lyle and Kenneth Carrier.

Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. on Monday in the Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home. A Scripture Service will be held at 7:30 p.m.

Mrs. Mathews will lie in state in St. Edward on-the-Lake Catholic Church from 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 10, 2018 until the Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. The Reverend Lee Acervo will officiate.

Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jim, Mike, Andy, Lance, Eddie, Rich and Joseph Mathews. Honorary pallbearers will be Julie Mathews, Lisa DeLacy, Angela Mathews, Jenny Fox and Alissa Dandalides.

Memorials may be made to Salvation Army Golden Agers and St. Edward-on-the-Lake Catholic Church.
