Nelson P Sturdevan

Nelson P. Sturdevan, 79, of Port Huron, died Tuesday, March 13, 2012.

He was born November 18, 1932 in Port Huron to the late Floyd Nelson and Helen (Brandimore) Sturdevan.

Mr. Sturdevan was employed with U.S. Steel for 42 years, retiring as a general manager in 1992. He served in the U.S. Army with the 816th Field Artillery Battalion in Darmstadt, Germany. He served with friends Sonny Spicer and Ed Schindler and made many trips back to Germany to visit the Schmidt family and other friends there.

He began his career on the Pittsburgh S. S. and later transferred from fleet vessels to the Cleveland, Ohio office, Duluth, Minnesota and then to Sault Ste. Marie as manager of U.S. Steel’s warehouse. He loved the trips on the vessels and taking friends and relatives as his guest. He designed gallery operations on many vessels, the Roger Blough, Edwin Gott and Edgar Speer.

Nelson once attended a dinner with President Geoge H.W. Bush, his wife, Barbara, Governor John Engler, and many of the president’s cabinet. He was a member of the Elks of Sault Ste. Marie, the Society of American Military Engineers, the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum of Whitefish Bay, and Sigma Beta business fraternity. He was a past member of the Great Lakes Ship Masters, an honorary member of the Huron Lightship Museum and a member of the Smithsonian Institute for many years.

He is survived by a sister, Joan (Arnold) Chickonoski; a nephew, Arnold (Kathy) Chickonoski; and a niece, Deborah. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Lou Bishop and her husband, Roy; a sister, Nancy Burns; and a brother Floyd “Sam” Sturdevan and his wife, Rosa.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday in Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 16, 2012 in Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home. Deacon John Connors of Holy Trinity Parish will officiate.

Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Port Huron. Military honors will be conducted under the auspices of the St. Clair County Allied Veterans Council. Pallbearers will be Arnold F. Chickonoski, Todd Leveille, Doug Decker, Ryan Zetuna, Carl Beach, Roy Bishop and Daniel J. Skutnik

Thanks to my extra special friends: Todd Leveille, and daughter, Abby; I will miss the morning coffee and the many chats, and how he always made me laugh, right to the end.
