Frank Gerbig Jr.

Frank R. Gerbig, Jr., 84, of Port Huron, formerly of Detroit passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 8, 2007. He is survived by his loving wife and partner of 60 years, Patricia K. (Griffin) Gerbig, his children, Kathryn M. (Michael) Koval, Frank R. Gerbig, III and Corinne G. (David) Victor; his grandchildren, Michael, Jr., Patricia Ann, Karin and Daniel Koval, Cali Lynn Gerbig and David, Jr., Timothy and Alex Victor and nieces and nephews. Frank was a 1945 graduate of the University of Detroit and was a veteran of WW II as a proud member of the Army Air Force serving with the Adjutant General's Department. In Frank's Port Huron life he was well known as "a doer". He was active in Catholic Social Services of St. Clair County, Port Huron Salvation Army, International Symphony Orchestra, Mercy Hospital, Mercy Marydale Center for Senior Citizens Newman Center, Port Huron Museum, St. Clair County Voting for Kids, the John R. Hogan Humanitarian Award, the Super Raffle I, II and III and was the recipient of the 2003 Spirit of Port Huron Lifetime Achievement Award. In Frank's Detroit life he was well known as a businessman, and a civic and community leader. As president of United States Fastener Corporation and Imperial Fasteners Ltd., Frank was actively involved in many facets including the President's Council of the American Institute of Management, chairman of special meetings for the Detroit SAE; participated as a special member of U.S. Senate Commission in Washington, D.C. and was a member of the Chairman's Committee of the U.S. Senate Business Advisory Board. Catholic charities included Marygrove College, first lay chairman of the Board of Trustees and representative to Michigan Colleges Foundation; University of Detroit as president of the National Alumni Board, chairman of many fund raising events, recipient of the Tower Award and president of Beta Theta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Psi International Business Fraternity; the Archdiocese of Detroit as president of the Board of Directors of Catholic Charities, chairman of Archdiocesan Survey of Retirees, president of the Department of Aging; Maryglade College Board of Trustees; Advisory Board for Jesuit Education; Mt. Carmel Mercy Hospital Board of Directors and U.S. Representative to Auxiliary of Brothers of Good Shepherd, Canada. Civic activities included Wayne State University, Board of Detroit Adventure and one of Michigan's first appointed Ombudsman and a consultant for special events with the State Department. Community activities included Michigan Opera Theater Board of Directors and special recognition from Fortune Magazine for production of "Carousel" as producer and part owner of Music Circle Summer Theater. Visitation for Frank will be Friday, January 12th from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home with a Scripture Service at 7:00 p.m. Additional visitation will take place Saturday beginning at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Church from where Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 11:00 a.m. Military honors accorded under auspices of St. Clair County Allied Veterans Council. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes in memory of Frank are preferred to Mercy Hospital's Peoples Clinic or Blue Water Hospice.
