Sydney Brewster Spofford, 100, of Marysville, died Tuesday, November 26, 2013 in her residence.

She was born March 29, 2013 in New York City, New York, the daughter of the late Sidney and Georgine Brewster. She married Charles M. Spofford in 1970. He preceded her in death in 1991.

She is survived by her daughter, Nora Neruda-Condland (James) of Fort Gratiot; beloved companion cat Tori; grandson-in-law, Lance Clouse of Port Huron and great grandson Andrew Clouse; special cousins Evie and Duncan Schecter of Huntington, New York, and three treasured stepchildren and many, many grandchildren and great grandchildren. There are too many others to mention all of them.

Sydney became "mom" and wonderful mentor to so many during her amazing life as a paralegal and later wife to Charles M. Spofford. Charles was Chairman and Ambassador to NATO, Co-founder of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and a respected New York attorney. She was by his side during his amazing career until his death in 1991.

The long and rich life of Sydney was best explained in a letter written by one of her favorite care givers.

“Sydney was extremely generous, caring, highly intelligent, educated, and no-nonsense but with a dry and most enjoyable sense of humor. Sydney did not cause or talk “drama”. She was up front, honest, serious, fair, and non-judgmental. She had good manners. She was a proper lady who demanded and got respect. She loved chocolate, reading books, cats, breakfast, and wearing colors. Sydney was not emotionally needy. She was confident in herself. She enjoyed a good conversation, but she enjoyed her alone time. She did not want to be hovered over. I have never known anyone that worked as hard as Sydney has worked at keeping her mind sharp. And sharp she was! A role model for all that loved her.”

Following Sydney’s wishes cremation will take place. Inurnment will be with her husband in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.

A celebration of her life will take place at a later time

Memorials may be made to the Blue Water Hospice.
