Joseph E. Schmitt, 79, of Port Huron, went to be with the Lord on Thursday , June 26, 2014, after a short illness.
He was born March 28, 1935 in Port Huron to the late Joseph and Anne Schmitt. He married Meredith O’Hare on September 9, 1989.
Joseph was an avid reader and enjoyed fishing. He did missionary work in Indonesia for 6 years and also served as a chaplain in several hospitals throughout the United States.
He was a member and usher at St. Mary Catholic Church. He was active with St. Vincent dePaul and was a member and past president of the Port Huron Host Lions Club.
He is survived by his wife, Meredith; a sister, Joan (Denis) Tetreau; a brother, Richard (Mariol) Schmitt; step-children, Bert O’Hare (Kim Sharpe), Brian (Janice) O’Hare, Brad O’Hare (Cheryl Heine), Mark (Lori) O’Hare, Melanie (Tom) Sheffer; several grandchildren, great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday, June 29, 2014 in Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home and from 10:30 a.m. until the service time Monday at church.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, June 30, 2014 in St. Mary Catholic Church. Father George Askar and Deacon Tim Maxwell will officiate.
Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Port Huron Host Lions Club or the wishes of the family.
