Darrel Wayne Smith, 83, of Fort Gratiot, died Friday, August 28, 2015, in his home, following a long illness.
He was born February 20, 1932 in Puposky, MN, the son of the late Hiram and Ida Smith. He married Leola B. Winch on March 1, 1954 in Port Huron.
Darrel served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a truck driver for many years and retired from the City of Port Huron Forestry Division in 1994.
He loved to hunt, but most of all, enjoyed spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Leola B. Smith; daughter, Carolyn (Robert) Hale; son, Darrel Smith, Jr. and Rhonda Laming; grandchildren, Robert C. Dingman, Alisha (Allen) Ross, and Megan Smith; great-grandchildren, Parker and Tanner Dingman and Kasey and Landry Ross; brother, Lavern (Nellie) Smith; and sister, Myra Jones. He was preceded in death by two brothers.
Visitation will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, August 31, 2015, in Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home and 10 a.m. until the time of service Tuesday at the church.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, September 1, 2015, in North Street United Methodist Church. Pastor David Reed will officiate.
Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Military honors will be conducted under the auspices of the United States Army and the Veterans Honor Guard Alliance.
Memorials may be made to North Street United Methodist Church.
