Robert W. Burns , 95, of Fort Gratiot, died Wednesday, September 16, 2015.
He was born March 20, 1920 in Alexandria, VA to the late John and Agnes Burns. He married May Ketels Maes on April 18, 1965 in Port Huron. She preceded him in death on October 16, 2007.
Bob received his B.B.A. and M.S. in Education from the University of Michigan. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the Army in the European Theatre. He was employed by the Army Tank Automotive Command, Warren, MI in procurement until retirement in December 1980.
He was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and longtime treasurer of Chapter 0012, NARFE. Bob was a member of First Congregational Church and a longtime volunteer for the American Red Cross and Port Huron Hospital.
He is survived by two daughters, Leona (Norman) Wingard of Loveland, CO and Barbara (Richard) Hamilton of Pewaukee, WI; son, Ronald (Marian) Maes of Armada, MI; six granddaughters, Cheryl (Rodney) Winter, Cherie (Jerome) Vangheluwe, Brenda (Brian) McKeen, Janine (Greg) Frank, Christina (Scott) Williams and Susan (Douglas) Brown; three grandsons, Jeffrey (Margaret) Wingard, Rocky Maes and Michael Maes; 16 great grandchildren; nieces and nephews, Diane Merriman, Jeffrey Burns, Suzanne Bacheller and Roy Burns and several great nieces and great nephews.
Bob was also preceded in death by a son, Darwin Maes and his brother and sister-in-law, Herbert and Dorothy Burns.
Visiting hours will be 4-8 pm Sunday at Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home. Pastor Don Doerzbacher will officiate. Burial will follow in Kinney Cemetery.
Family prefers memorial donations be directed to the McLaren-Port Huron Hospital Auxiliary or the American Red Cross.
