John Armstrong

John Thomas Armstrong, 91, of Fort Gratiot, died Wednesday, October 28, 2015.

He was born December 8, 1923 in Port Huron to the late Edward and Elizabeth Armstrong. He married Elizabeth “Betty” Hoffman on February 11, 1950 in Port Huron.

Mr. Armstrong was a letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service for 31½ years. He also worked with the grounds crew at Black River County Club for 11 years. John graduated from St. Stephen’s Catholic School, Port Huron Junior College and attended the U.S. Army Specialized Training Program at St. Louis University. He was a Corporal in the U.S. Army 44th Infantry Division during WWII serving in the European Theatre of Operations as a gunner and forward observer. He was instrumental in the development of the St. Clair County ARC and had served as president. He was also past president of the St. Stephen’s Alumni Association and Local 597 National Association of Letter Carriers. John loved sports, gardening and the outdoors.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Betty; four children, Stephen (Becky) Armstrong, Dr. Mark (Susan) Armstrong, Theresa (Richard) Alonso and Sheila Armstrong; five grandchildren, Nicholas (Annie) Armstrong, William Armstrong, James Armstrong, Daniel Alonso and Maria Alonso; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Lucille Jones and Virginia Powers.

Visitation will be 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Sunday in Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home.

Mr. Armstrong will lie in state from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. on Monday, November 2, 2015 in St. Stephen Catholic Church. The Reverend Jeffrey Allan will officiate. Military honors will be conducted under the auspices of the U.S. Army and the St. Clair County Allied Veterans Honor Guard.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Michigan Special Olympics, the St. Stephen’s Athletes, Mid-City Nutrition or Holy Trinity Parish St. Stephen Catholic Church.
