Obituary

John Edward Unger, 77, of Clyde died Friday, April 28, 2017.

He was born April 22, 1940 in Danville, Illinois to the late Margaret and LeRoy Unger.

John grew up in the country near East Lynn, Illinois until moving to Watseka, Illinois at the age of 8. He attended Watseka grade and high schools. He was very active in all areas of music including singing, piano and saxophone. He was also active in the Watseka Methodist Church.

From 1958-1962 he attended Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Illinois where he majored in music education. Later he received an MS degree in music at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. John taught both vocal and instrumental music in Bloomington, Illinois, Valparaiso, Indiana and Port Huron. John retired from teaching in 1996 and was currently the Music Director at Faith Lutheran Church in Port Huron.

He loved people. He was a happy jovial soul and a beautiful Christian. He was a true Unger. His companion throughout the years was always a dog whom he loved.

John is survived by his sister, Pat Miller of Rockford, Illinois; nephew, Stephen (Joan) Miller of Rockford, Illinois; niece, Holly (Douglas) Traxler of Oakton, Virginia; great nieces, Olivia Miller of Denver, Colorado and Victoria Traxler of Oakton, Virginia; great nephews, Daniel and Jack Traxler of Oakton, Virginia; and numerous cousins.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 4, 2017 at 11:00 am in Faith Lutheran Church, Port Huron, with visitation from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Committal services will be held at Floral Hill Cemetery in Hoopeston, Illinois on Saturday May 6, 2017 at 12 noon where he will be buried with his parents.

Memorials may be made to Faith Lutheran Church.

John’s family wishes to thank all of the doctors and nurses at McLaren Hospital and also Pastor Mark Huff and all of his wonderful friends in Port Huron. He loved you all so much.
