Bernice Lawan Fontenot, 72, of Port Huron, died Sunday, March 21, 2021.
She was born October 29, 1948 in Monroe, Georgia.
Bernice worked at Fort Gratiot Meijer for 18 years, sold Avon, and was previously a nurse aide for Visiting Nurses Association. She was a strong, independent woman with a keen wit and a great sense of humor. She enjoyed reading and puzzles and loved her family more than anything.
She is survived by four children, Kenneth (Jackie) Fontenot, Jeannette Fontenot, Cheryl Genna and Tammy Fontenot; 12 grandchildren, Whitney, Heather, K.J., Brayden, Taj (Tristin), Jessica, Tré, Janie, Janella, Darian, Brenden and Jake; 11 great grandchildren and one on the way; two brothers, Joseph (Lucy) Nix and Ray Brown; a sister-in-law, Susan Nix; her best friend, Vicki Patterson; and her longtime companion, Patches the cat. She was preceded in death by her parents, Hugh and Sultana Nix; a brother, David Nix; a sister-in-law, Barbara Brown; and a granddaughter, Justine Marie-Leigh Fontenot.
Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Wednesday in Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home. A limited number of people will be allowed in at a time. Please wear a mask for the safety and comfort of others.
Private family services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 25, 2021 in Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home. Pastor Pat Thompson will officiate. The livestream of the service can be viewed on Bernice’s obituary page on the funeral home website.
Burial will be in Burtchville Township Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bernice’s grandchildren.
