Samuel Lee Chapman, 87, of Port Huron, died Sunday, June 6, 2021.

He was born January 14, 1934 in Anniston, Alabama to the late Hosea and Dexer Chapman. He married Delores Means on December 17, 1955 in Columbus, Ohio.

Mr. Chapman attended Port Huron High School and St. Clair County Community College and received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Michigan State University. He was a teacher in the Port Huron Area School District and also ran the Cleveland Center for the Parks and Recreation Department for many years. Samuel published several books, was an artist, and was an inventor and patent holder for a hypodermic syringe.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Delores; six children, Patsy Chapman, Winslow Chapman, Dexer (Thurston) Chapman Johnson, James (Pattie) Chapman, David Chapman and John (Shelly) Chapman; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; a sister, Elouia Chapman Howard; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by a son, Samuel Chapman Jr.; two daughters, an infant and Tiny Chapman; a brother, Willis C. Chapman; and three sisters, Rosalind Chapman, Edith Henderson and Marilyn Chapman.

Visitation will be 5-9 p.m. Friday in Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 12, 2021 New Covenant Life Ministries. The Reverend Eric Price will officiate.

Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Port Huron.
