Helen Tomchuk, of Port Huron, died on Sunday, December 18, 2011. She was born on February 7, 1922 in Fisher Branch, Manitoba, Canada. She met Steve Tomchuk in Fisher Branch and they married on November 10, 1951 in Winnipeg, Manitoba where they lived until moving to the Port Huron area in 1953. Steve died on June 25, 2000.
Steve and Helen had three daughters, E. Gail (Charles) Kelly, Port Huron, Deborah Tomchuk, Hendersonville, NC, and Lisa (Dr. Mark) Hartman, Cornelius, NC and four grandchildren, Stevens T. Kelly (fiancée Nichole Moody), Chicago, Elizabeth S. Kelly, New York City, and Joseph and Samuel Hartman, both of Cornelius, NC.
Helen was a strong accomplished person. She was an athlete, a star player on the Manitoba Championship Women’s Softball team and a golfer until her late seventies. She was always a hard worker, beginning with helping work her family farm, establishing her own business before marriage and assisting Steve and her brother-in-law Bill Sitka with the family’s T &S Pepsi distributing business. She worked many years with school children at Holland Woods School and Palmer Park, respecting each child as an individual. She was a consummate gardener until her last year and a fine bridge player who loved the game so much and her many bridge friends even more. She was a proud American, having become a citizen on April 30, 1957. She was a person of faith who attended St. Mary’s Church in Port Huron for many years.
Above all, she was a mother and grandmother (our “Baba”) who loved, lived for and was so proud of her family.
She is survived by her children and grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters Jennie Boyko and Victoria Tomchuk and brothers Edward(Tillie) and Theodore (Mary)Malenchak, all of Canada. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her brothers Walter, Joseph and Frank Malenchak and her sister Mary Holowka.
