Derek T Kita

Derek Thomas Kita, 49, of Croswell, died Monday, July 21, 2025.

He was born December 6, 1975 in Pontiac, Michigan. He married Shannon K. Johnston on February 12, 2005 in Snover, Michigan.

Derek earned his associates degree from St. Clair County Community College and worked for IAC in Port Huron for 28 years. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed deer hunting and fishing with his father. He loved looking for deer on his side by side and spending time with his family at his cottage in Port Sanilac. Derek was an amazing father who always showed up to watch his children play sports and root for all the kids on the team. He had a love for animals, especially for dogs and cats, a passion for cooking, volunteering in his community and traveling to Florida to visit family.

He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Shannon; children, Olivia, Ian and Wyatt Kita; mother, Doris (Michael) Schmiedeknecht; sister and brother-in-law, Kristi Kita (Aaron Schattler); father-in-law and mother-in-law, Dennis and Cindy Johnston; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Shawn (Jessica) Johnston, Shane (James) Welch, Shasta Johnston (Henry Buitting) and Stefen (Danielle) Johnston, and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Kita.

An open house style celebration of life will be held from 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 26, 2025, all that knew and loved him are welcomed to his home, 7793 Cribbins Rd., Croswell, MI 48422.

The family prefers memorial contributions be made to the Sanilac County Humane Society
