John M Forbes

John Murch Forbes, 70, of Fort Gratiot, died peacefully and surrounded by family on Sunday April 26, 2026.

He was born December 19, 1955 in Detroit to the late Jack and Barbara Forbes. He married Deborah A. Shather on August 9, 1980 at Drayton Avenue Presbyterian Church in Ferndale.

John attended Michigan State University, Western Michigan University, Oakland University, and lastly Wayne State University, where he earned his Ph.D. in Political Science. He went on to teach graduate courses in Political Science and Public Administration at WSU and CMU. Beyond his professional life, he loved photography, riding his bicycle, gardening, music, travel, art, and above all else, his family.

He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Deborah; his children, Adrian (Katherine) Forbes and Ashley (James) Huntley; his grandchildren, Landon and Theodore Forbes, Fox and Leo Huntley; brothers, David (Carol) Forbes, Robert (Jill) Forbes and Thomas (Dorothy) Forbes; and several nieces and nephews.

John Forbes was kind to all, loved laughing (especially at his own jokes), and having thought provoking conversations. Both the legacy and hole he leaves behind is beyond measure.

A memorial visitation will be held from 2-8 p.m. on Friday, May 8, 2026 in Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home.

Burial will be at Lakeside Cemetery, Port Huron.
