Helen Smith

Wanda Helen Smith, 87 of Port Huron, was promoted to her heavenly home on Thursday, September 24, 2026. She was born January 12, 1939 in Tams, West Virginia to the late Howard and Pearl Browning Goode. She married Harley Smith of Goodells, MI on August 25, 1957 in Crab Orchard, WV.

Helen was a 1956 graduate of Mark Twain High School, where she was the valedictorian of her class. She graduated from Port Huron Junior college with an Associate Degree in Nursing in 1962, and from Michigan State University in 1965 with a BA degree in Education. She also attended Berea College for one year. Helen has fond memories of working in the Operating Room at Port Huron Hospital at the beginning of her career. Mrs. Smith was a Nursing Instructor at St. Clair County Community College for 25 years, retiring in 1990.

Helen was a member of Ross Bible church for almost 60 years. She worked as an AWANA Director, Sunday School teacher, Missions Committee member, and Director of the Senior’s Program. She enjoyed serving as camp nurse for many years, and helping with Golden Agers. She was faithful in serving the Lord and advancing His kingdom. She was supportive of many mission organizations including Final Frontiers, Child Evangelism Fellowship, Camp Barakel, Good News Camp, Children’s Bible Hour, and Gideons.

Helen is fondly remembered for her ministry of sending cards (and tracts) for all occasions! She loved reading and gospel music. She also enjoyed crafting, camping, and spent countless hours watching her family play softball! Helen was a very thoughtful and kind woman. She was always on the lookout for ways she could bless people, by her generosity of sharing clothing, food, jokes, and whatever she thought you would love.

She is survived by three children, Brenda (The Rev. Dr. Tom) Seppo, Ken (Carol) Smith, and Marv (Lisa) Smith; along with seven grandchildren, Rebecca (Aaron) Achatz, Andrea (Joshua) Schultz, Andrew (Cait) Seppo, Aaron (Clark) Smith, Kelsey (Bharath) Smith, Tyler (Caitlyn) Smith and Katie (Caleb) Wright; ten great-grandchildren, Jana, Tessa, Roman, Logan, Scout, Harper, Malachi, June, Ella, and Brooks, with baby Schultz coming. Helen is also survived by sisters-in-law, Patsy Goode and Gerry Goode; brother-in-law, Tim Dillon; and many nieces and nephews.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Harley; three sisters, Betty Jo Justus, Jane Coyle and Shirley Dillon; three brothers, Howard Jr., Paul and Roy Goode; and grandson, Clayton Smith.

The family thanks her caregivers, Shauna, Tara, and Linda for their excellent care and friendship in her final years.

Visitation will be from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, September 27, 2026 in Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 28, 2026 in Ross Bible Church with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. To honor Helen, consider wearing pink - her favorite color! Pallbearers will be Aaron Smith, Andrew Seppo, Tyler Smith, Aaron Achatz, Joshua Schultz and Caleb Wright.
