James V "Jim" McTevia
James Vergil “Jim” McTevia, 89, of New Baltimore, passed away on Wednesday, September 30, 2026.
James was born December 4, 1936 in St. Clair, Michigan to the late Vergil and Marie McTevia.
Jim graduated from Holy Cross High and received his degree from Port Huron Junior College. His early employment included being a repossessor, salesman, and banker. Later, Jim worked at Peninsular and Paragon Steel as a credit manager. It was in this role that James gained expertise in turnaround management and became involved with the National Association of Credit Management. In 1976, James founded James V. McTevia & Associates, financial advisors and consultants for financially distressed corporations, often serving as a bankruptcy trustee. Jim was also the author of several books that recount his expertise and personal experiences.
James is survived by his loving wife Joan (Mugridge) “Blue Eyes”. They recently celebrated 69 years of marriage. James is also survived by his children Anita (John) Dupes, Michael (Mary) McTevia, and John McTevia; his grandchildren, Jason, Maggie, Nathan, Nicole, Jenna, Jacob, and Madison; and nine great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Jimi; daughter-in-law Joan; and granddaughter Jocelyn.
James had many passions. One of his earliest was working on freighters on the Great Lakes, where he developed a lifelong love of being on the water. Jim and his family spent many happy times boating and water skiing. He also enjoyed winter sports, including speed skating in his youth and downhill skiing well into his seventies! Jim and Joan shared a love of travel and took many memorable trips together. They also treasured time spent with family in Boothbay Harbor, Maine; Jupiter, Florida; and at their farm in Harbor Springs, Michigan.
Jim was known for his sharp wit. He always had a clever comeback. James’s generosity and love for his family will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him. He believed in building relationships and memories that stand the test of time.
