Maxine K Gwisdala

Maxine K. Gwisdala, 89, of Fort Gratiot, died Sunday, October 4, 2026.

She was born December 29, 1936 in Port Huron to the late David and Erma (Roelens) Wheelihan. She married Joseph P. Gwisdala on February 19, 1955 in Lakeport. He preceded her in death on October 13, 1999 after 44 years of marriage.

Maxine was a 1954 graduate of St. Stephen High School. She was an active parishioner of St. Mary Catholic Church, where she served as a Eucharistic Minister and Lector and was involved with the Funeral Luncheon Committee and Baptismal Bib Committee. She also served as an altar worker at the church for several years. Maxine was an aide to two individuals with disabilities, providing them with care and assistance. In her free time, she enjoyed playing bingo and other games of chance.

She is survived by four children, Joanne Sischo, Kathy Gwisdala, Joseph (Karen) Gwisdala Jr. and Todd Gwisdala; three grandchildren, Peaceful-Spirit (Tom) Gantenbein, Samuel Sischo and Melissa King (Matt); great-grandchildren, Kate and Alexa Gantenbein, Kaitlyn Reeves, Dylan and Austin Dzubinski; great-great grandsons, Noah and Kamrin Karalis; sister, Teresa Bennett; brother, Harold Wheelihan; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her son, David S. Gwisdala; grandson, Stephan-John Sischo; great-grandson, Michael Reeves; sisters, Mary Ann Tetreau and Veronica Wheelihan; and brothers, James and Charles Wheelihan.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Monday, October 12, 2026 in Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 13, 2026 in St. Mary Catholic Church, Port Huron with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. The Reverend Zbigniew Zomerfeld will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
