Noreen S Derer
January 21st, 1948 to September 25th, 2012
The soul of Noreen S. Derer, 64, journeyed to her final resting place in heaven on September 25, 2012.
She was born on January 21, 1948 in Cleveland, Ohio to the late Paul and Noreane Sharkus. Noreen grew up in Mentor, Ohio. She studied at Iowa State University and graduated with both a Bachelor of Science Degree and a Masters Degree in Food and Nutrition. She was a Registered Dietitian, and a Certified Diabetes Educator. She taught Nutrition at Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pennsylvania. She worked as a Registered Dietitian at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, Illinois, and at Port Huron Hospital in Port Huron, Michigan until she retired in 2011. She participated in the Breast Cancer Support Group at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Port Huron, Michigan. She was a member of St. Mary Church in Port Huron.
Noreen was fortunate to meet and marry her soul mate, John Derer, at Iowa State University on March 13, 1971. She most cherished their trips to Jerusalem, and Lourdes, France in recent years.
Noreen had many hobbies, including writing poems and essays for the Catholic Press under the pen name of Sascha T. Moore, and collecting stones and fossils and Star Trek toys.
Noreen loved her family and is survived by her husband John, her son Matthew, her daughter Michelle Rymer, her son Joseph, her dear grandson Lukas Rymer and her brother Jerry Sharkus.
She was preceded in death by her step-father Joseph Kissoff of Mentor-On-The-Lake, Ohio and her son-in-law, Mark Rymer.
Visitation will be from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM on Friday in the Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home. A rosary will be recited at 7 pm on Friday.
Noreen will lie in state at St. Mary Catholic Church in Port Huron on Saturday September 29, 2012 from 9:30 AM until the Funeral Mass at 10:00AM. The Reverend Zbigniew Zomerfeld will officiate. Burial will be in Mt Hope Cemetery.
Memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society or St. Mary Church.
