Emil Touma, D.D.S.
December 18th, 1921 to October 1st, 2012
Fort Gratiot - Dr. Emil Touma, D.D.S. died peacefully on Monday, October 1, 2012 at the age of 90. He was born in Port Huron December 18, 1921 to Nassif and Freida Shamaly Touma, who came to the U.S. from Lebanon.
Emil married Rose Saffire on June 8, 1947. She preceded him in death in 2009.
He graduated from Port Huron High School, Port Huron Junior College and the University of Michigan. He started dental school at the U of M under R.O.T.C. Graduating in 1943. After graduating with his D.D.S. Degree, he was stationed at Camp Perry, VA as a U.S. Navy Medical Officer in WWII. When he was discharged from the Navy, he started his dental practice in Port Huron in 1946 until his retirement in 1986.
He was past president of the Thumb District Dental Society, Port Huron Golf Club and the Michigan Golf Association. He was also a past member of Great Lakes Golf Club, Black River Country Club, Glades Country Club in Naples, FL and the Port Huron Elks Lodge 343.
After his retirement, he and his wife spent 22 winters in Naples, FL. While there, he volunteered delivering Meals on Wheels and checking blood pressures.
Dr. Touma was an avid golfer, enjoyed bowling and loved to barbecue. He was known for his famous chicken recipe. He also loved spending time with his family and lit up when he saw his great grandchildren.
He is survived by his four daughters, Sharon Adams of Fort Gratiot, Barbara Touma of Marysville, Janet (Lee) Hodge of Lakeport and Judy (Chuck) Zimmer of Port Huron; eight grandchildren, Kim (Bill) Janeczko of Midland, Dr. Tamar Finan MD (Dr. Chadi El Saleeby, MD) of Boston, MA; Emil (Ashley) Zimmer of Kalamazoo, Charlie (Erin) Zimmer of Beaverton, Amy Zimmer-Smith of Port Huron, Michael (Amanda) Adams of Port Huron, Miranda Hodge of Sterling Heights and Ryan Hodge of Las Vegas, NV; twelve great grandchildren Erik and Ethan Smith, Michael Adams, Jr., Kenneth McCracken, Nolan and Konnor Janeczko, Michael and Sofia Saleeby, Hattan and Jameson Zimmer, Eli Shier and Sophie Zimmer; brother, Dr. Alfred (Nancy) Touma of Pleasant Ridge and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by long time son-in-law, Mike Adams of Fort Gratiot.
Emil was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Shaker Touma, Dr. George Touma and Philip Touma.
A Celebratory Mass will be held on Monday, October 8, 2012 at 11 am preceded by one hour of visitation at St. Mary Catholic Church, 1505 Ballentine, Port Huron. Burial will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery with Military Honors under the auspices of the St. Clair County Allied Veterans.
Visitation at Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home will be Sunday, October 7, 2012 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm.
Pallbearers will be Emil and Charlie Zimmer, Michael Adams, Ryan Hodge, Lee Hodge and Chuck Zimmer. Honorary Pallbearers will be Dr. Chadi El Saleeby, MD and Bill Janeczko.
Memorials for Dr. Touma may be made to the Community Enterprises of St. Clair County (former ARC).
The family would like to thank all the staff at Barss Residential for the wonderful care they gave Dr. Touma while there. Also thanks to his former caregiver, Liz Hyde and Dr. Anil Patel.
