John Youngs M.D.

John A. Youngs M.D. 79, died unexpectedly on Saturday, July 22, 2006 in Port Huron Hospital. He was born April 25, 1927 in Sudbury, Ontario to the late Earl Riley & Vera Youngs and had lived in the Blue Water area since the late 1950's. John married Carolyn L. Nelson on February 11, 1956 in St. Edward On-The-Lake Catholic Church, Lakeport officiated by the late Rev. Fr. John R. Hogan. John graduated from the University of Toronto Medical School and served his internship at Mt. Carmel Hospital, Detroit where he met his loving wife. He was a member of the St. Clair County Medical Society joining in 1961 and Mercy Hospital Medical Staff from 1961 to October of 1999 when he retired. He served as Chief of Surgery from 1965 to 1966, 1973 and 1983 to 1984. John was Vice-Chief of Staff in 1973 and Chief of Staff in 1974, Chairman of the Ethics Committee from 1980 to 1982 and Honorary Staff member from 1999 to present. He volunteered after retirement at Mercy Hospital People's Clinic and the Habitat for Humanity. John loved woodworking, the outdoors and nature especially bird watching. John had a passion for good literature and knew all the great authors. He was a loving husband, dear father and a very generous man who helped anyone in time of need especially those less fortunate. John is survived by his wife, Carolyn L. Youngs of North Street; daughter, Susan A. Keeling of Kimball; sons, John Riley Youngs and friend Linda of Port Huron and Michael N. (Carol) Youngs of Fort Gratiot; Grandchildren, Carolyn A. Youngs, Sean M. Youngs, Dustin A. Youngs, Michelle M. Youngs and Brittany J. Romani; his little buddy Pinky; mother-in-law, Evelyn Nelson of Port Huron; sister-in-law, Patricia Miller (the late Dr. John Miller) of Fort Gratiot; brother-in-law, Jack (Sharon) Nelson of Scottsdale, Az; sisters- in-law, Joanne (Gary) Ebert of Harsens Island and Sara Jane (Robert) Rowling of Fort Gratiot; nieces and nephews, Gregory and Robert Miller, Mary Beth Ferrante, John Nelson, Robert Rowling, Jr and Kristy Rowling; Also surviving are fellow colleagues and staff at Mercy Hospital, Port Huron hospital and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by two sisters, one brother and best friend Dr. Mahmoud Chafty. A celebration of John's life will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials in John's memory may be given to the Mercy Hospital People's Clinic or the Habitat for Humanity.
