Alexander Sweeney

Alexander James Sweeney, Sr. Kimball - Alexander James Sweeney, Sr., age 80, of Kimball, died at home surrounded by his family on April 5, 2007, after a long illness. He was born December 4, 1926 in Emmett, MI. Alex graduated from Port Huron Business College, served in WWII for two years and retired from Detroit Edison after 42 years. He served as a volunteer firefighter for Kimball Township Fire Department for 18 years, and was Fire Chief for six years. Alex enjoyed bingo, bus trips to the casino, and breakfast at Ted's Coney Island. Alex married Eleanor L. Fraley on June 10, 1950. They raised their 13 children in Kimball Township. Alex is survived by his wife of 56 years, Eleanor. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother. He is survived by his seven sons, Cpt. Alexander James, Jr.(Adrienne) of Anchorage, AK; Dr, Douglas (Cindy) of Troy; Gary (JoAnne) of Fort Gratiot; Dr. Patrick (Eileen) of Grosse Point Woods; Dr. Dale (Char) of Fort Gratiot; Cpt. David (Rhylin) of Las Vegas, N; Leo (Nora) of Las Vegas, NV; six daughters, Janet (Michael) Cain of Fort Gratiot; Carol (Paul) Hines of West Bloomfield; Mary Ann (Dr. Jeffery) Easton of Fort Gratiot; Kathleen (Daniel) Moore of St. Clair; Colleen (Michael) Pattullo of Petosky; Paula (Durrand) Ashford of Shelby Twp. He is also survived by 24 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, known as his "Peanut Kids" who will miss him greatly. Alex is also survived by his sister, Mary Ann "Sapphire"(Patrick) Quain, of Emmett, brothers William (Mary Ellen) of Port Huron, and Joseph (Joan) of St. Clair Shores. He was preceded in death by his parents Leo R. And Pearl Sweeney of Emmett, and a brother, Lawrence Sweeney of Eastpoint. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. The Rev. Brian K. Cokonougher will officiate. Burial will be in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Emmett. Military Rites will be conducted by the St. Clair County Allied Veterans Council. His grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Visiting hours will be 5-9 p.m. Monday and 2-9 p.m. Tuesday at Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home. A scripture service will be recited at 7 p.m Tuesday in the funeral home. The family requests that donations be made to the American Red Cross, Blue Water Hospice, or St. Joseph Church. In Lieu of monetary donations, the family suggests that a blood donation be made to the American Red Cross in memory of Alex.
