Richard J Hobden
December 20th, 1948 to October 20th, 2014
Richard J. “Dick” Hobden, 65, passed away on Monday, October 20, 2014, six years after having been diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer’s and an ischemic heart condition caused by his exposure to Agent Orange while in the U.S. Air Force serving a year in the Vietnam War. He was amazing in demonstrating his unfailing life-long courage to the very end of his life at home, in in-home hospice surrounded by his family.
Dick was born on December 20, 1948 to the late Robert Harding Hobden and Ethel Rose Hobden in Port Huron, Michigan. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen L. (Cook) Hobden, whom he married on November 8, 1969; their daughter, Marlana Louise Jenee Hobden, both of Fort Gratiot, Michigan; brother, Frederick John Hobden and wife, Kathy Hobden of Colorado; brother, Robert Harding Hobden II of Colorado; his twin brother, William J. Hobden and wife, Peggy Hobden of Ruby, Michigan; Father and Mother-in-Law, Arthur E. Cook Sr. and Jean Cook; Sister-in-Law Ann Eileen (Cook) Mortimer and her husband Lee Mortimer; nieces, Kimberly Hobden, Debbie (Bill) Leeper, Carmen Hobden, Kari (Jimmy) Joslin, and Kay (Mike) Wesch; nephews, Ken Hobden, Jason Hobden, Bobby Hobden, Sam Ayotte, and Nathan (Crystal) Ayotte; as well as several grandnieces and grandnephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and Brother-in-Law, Arthur E. Cook Jr.
Dick graduated from Port Huron High School in 1967, served four active years in the U.S. Air Force and two years inactive duty. He attended college and worked in the auto industry estimating, designing machinery and finally as the lead heavy design engineer with a staff of twenty engineers working on machinery to assemble specific lines of the popular PT Cruiser. Dick was proud of his work and missed his job when the engineering field began to be outsourced during the last recession.
His wife owned the real estate advertising magazine Hobden's Today's Homes and Dick owned Hobden's Business Kinetics which distributed Hobden's Today's Homes as well as the Mi Real Source magazine, which was published by the second largest multi-list company in Michigan. He managed all the routes for six counties: St. Clair, Sanilac, Lapeer, Huron, Macomb and Tuscola. Today's Homes and Hobden's Business Kinetics closed when the recession advanced into the real estate market.
Dick loved everything to do with aircraft or cars. He was a devoted father and loved spending time with his family and friends, laughing, dancing, swimming, playing cards and photography. He did catalog photography for some industry catalogs as well as photos for Port Huron Little Theatre many years before it became the now known Port Huron Civic Theatre.
He and his wife Kathy would have celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary November 8, 2014. He will be dearly missed and loved always.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, October 22, 2014 in the Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, October 23, 2014, in the Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home.
Burial will be in Woodland Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
