William E. Smiley

William E. Smiley, 89, of Fort Gratiot,

passed away on Saturday, July 18, 2009 in Mercy Hospital following a

short illness.

He was born June 26, 1920 in Port

Huron son of the late Arthur and Melva (Phelps) Smiley.

He married the former Alice M.

Perkins. She preceded him in death on July 23, 2004.

William was a graduate of Port

Huron High School and attended the University of Michigan. He served

in the U.S. Army from 1941 to1945 being discharged with the rank of

Captain. He was formerly employed with Great American Insurance

Company and was active in Fort Gratiot Township serving as

Supervisor, Trustee and Treasurer. He was elected St. Clair County

Commissioner for many years, served as Chairman of the Board at the

Council on Aging and was also active with Blue Water Transportation.

William was a founding and life long member of St. Edward On-The-

Lake Catholic Church.

He is survived by daughter, Linda

Kiest of Kalamazoo, MI; son, Michael (Kathleen) Smiley of Ames, IA;

daughter, Patricia Smiley (William Miles) of Easton, PA; daughter,

Jane Jordon of Atlantic Mine, MI; grandchildren, Noah Smiley, Sarah

Smiley and Timothy Miles.

Funeral services will be 9:30 am

Thursday in St. Edward On-The-Lake Catholic Church. The Rev. Joseph

M. Esper, Pastor will officiate. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope

Cemetery with military honors under auspices of the St. Clair County

Allied Veterans Council.

Visitation will be 2-4 & 7-9

pm Wednesday in the Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home and 9 am Thursday at

the church.

Memorials may be given to the

Council on Aging or St. Edward On-The-Lake Catholic Church.
