Shirley E. Kearns Port Huron - Shirley E. Kearns, 87, died peacefully on Saturday, March 29, 2008, at Mercy Village surrounded by her family. She was born May 18, 1920 to the late Lawrence and Zilpha Annett.. She married William F. Kearns on January 16, 1943 in St. Joseph Church, Port Huron. He died August 11, 2003. Shirley was a 1938 graduate of Port Huron High School and a graduate of Port Huron Junior College Nursing program in 1962. She worked at Port Huron Hospital Pediatric Jenks Unit from 1962-1965 and worked for the St. Clair County Health Department from 1965-1983. She was a lifelong master bridge player. She enjoyed watching freighters and entertaining friends at her house on the lake for over 40 years. She was a recipient of the American Heart Association Volunteer Award at the American Heart Ball in 1999. She was known for doing things for others. She is survived by her children, William L. (Gloria) Kearns, Annette (Robert) Phipps and Barbara (Charles) Teller; grandchildren, Marcella (Raphael) Tolentino, William Kearns, Michael (Jean) Phipps and Tim Phipps; great grandchildren Matea Kearns, Morgan Phipps, Kelsey Phipps and Edwin Tolentino and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her "brothers and sisters" of the Tom and Mary Kearns Family: Bob and Dorothy, Tom and Isabelle, Margaret and Chuck, Kate and Emmett, Ted and Betty, Jack and Noreen, Al and Marge. Funeral mass will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Church. The Rev. Simeon T. Iber, Pastor will officiate. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Mike Phipps, Tim Phipps, B.J. Kearns, Pat Letzgus, Denny Kearns and Tom Kearns. Visiting hours are 3-9 p.m. Tuesday at Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home and from 9:15 a.m. until the service time Wednesday at church. Memorials may be made to Blue Water Hospice, Blue Water Humane Society or the charity of the donor's choice.
