John D Atkinson
May 8th, 1940 to October 25th, 2013
John D. “Jack” Atkinson, 73, of Port Huron, died Friday, October 25, 2013 in St. John River District Hospital.
He was born May 8, 1940 in Sarnia, Ontario, the son of the late James and Dorothy Atkinson. He married Jeanne M. Sweet on November 24, 1990 in Florida.
Jack was a lifelong Port Huron area resident having retired from Local #463 and also from Seafarers International Union of Algonac. He served with the U.S. Merchant Marines in Vietnam from 1967 to 1968.
He was a member of L.O.O.M. #158, the Fraternal Order of Eagles and was an avid hunter and loved to kid and joke with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanne of Port Huron; son, John Atkinson Jr. of Florida; step-daughter, Bobbie Jean Sweet of Port Huron; step-son, Robert Sweet of Port Huron; three grandchildren, Kody Hoffman, Britanie Sweet and Robert Sweet III; and his brother, Robert (Esther) Atkinson of Lansing. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Judy Stapleton.
Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday, October 27, 2013 in the Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home. Pastor Jim Huff will officiate. Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. in the funeral home.
Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Shriners Children’s Hospital.
