Lewis W Gover

Lewis W. Gover, 78, of North Street, died unexpectedly on Monday, December 1, 2014 in Port Huron.

He was born September 3, 1936 in Rockcastle County, KY, the beloved son of the late Henry and Mae (Goff) Gover. He married Janet L. Gruber on June 20, 1964.

Lew went to school until the age of 12. He quit school to get a job to help support family.

He started working at Arlie Stone’s Garage when he was 14 and became a mechanic, working his way to master mechanic.

Mr. Gover was drafted into the Army in 1959. He was discharged in 1960. He was employed as a practical nurse stationed at Fitzsimons General Hospital in Denver, Colorado.

Lew loved boating and owned an Owens Flagship cruiser. From there he moved to camping, ending with a 34’ Travelcraft R.V.

In 1976 he went to work for SEMTA (now known as Smart Transportation). He retired in 1991 and moved his family from Clinton Township to Emmett Township and then to North Street.

Lewis liked to do woodworking and puttering in his workshop. As he got older, arthritis set in, causing some very bad days.

Lew and Jan celebrated their 50th anniversary on June 20, 2014.

He is survived his wife, Janet; and two sisters, Lois (Al) Sheets and Evelyn (Frank) Steenbergh.

Lew was preceded in death by his father and mother (Henry and Mae); two brothers, Austin and Clyde; sister, LaVerne; and son, Jeffrey.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, December 20, 2014 in Holy Redeemer Lutheran Church, 4475 West Water, Port Huron, with visitation from 12 to 1 p.m. Reverend Andrew Schroeder will officiate.

A luncheon will follow the service.

Arrangements are by the Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home.
