Donald George Robbers, 90 of Fort
Gratiot, died Wednesday, February 18, 2009 in Port Huron Hospital
following a short illness.
He was born December 18, 1918 in
Staples, Minnesota and has lived here most of his life.
He married the former Viola Mae
Johnson on January 21, 1942 in Verndale, Minnesota. She preceded him
in death on May 14, 1999.
Donald served in the U.S. Army
from 1942 to 1946. He retired in 1965 from the Michigan Army
National Guard as Lt. Colonel. He was employed as an Immigration
Inspector by the Department of Justice retiring in 1974. He was a
member of Charles Hammond American Legion Post #8 and Msgr. E.J.
McCormick Knights of Columbus Council #521. Donald and Viola were
charter members of St. Mary Catholic Church where he served as a
Eucharistic Minister for over 30 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing,
camping, canoeing and playing cards.
He is survived by his daughter,
Ellen J. (Ron J.) Schock of North Street; grandsons, Mark S. Schock
of St. Clair Shores and Matt E. Schock of Royal Oak; sister, Mary
Johnson of St. Cloud, MN; sister-in-law, Kay Einhorn of Woodland
Hills, CA and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his
daughter Donna Marie Fannon and parents George and Mary Robbers.
Funeral services will be 10 am
Friday in St. Mary's Catholic Church. The Rev. Simeon T. Iber,
Pastor will officiate. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery with
military honors under auspices of the American Legion Merrick Potter
Post #566, Memphis.
Visiting hours are 7-9 pm today in
the Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home and 9 am Friday at the church. A
rosary will be recited at 7:30 pm this evening.
Pallbearers will be Mark S.
Schock, Matt E. Schock, Ron J. Schock, Jerry Schock, Gerry Johnson
and Marty Zimmer.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may
be given to the charity of the donor's choice.
