Jerry Emmet Lynch, 88, died

peacefully on April 18, 2009 in Mercy Village.

Born in Sullivan, Wisconsin,

January 23, 1921, the eldest of four sons to Dr. George M. and

Katharine (Garity) Lynch, he was a graduate of Jefferson (WI) High

School (1938), Whitewater (WI) State University (B.E. 1943) and

Michigan State University (M.A. 1954).

He served as an artillery officer

with the 1 st Marine Division on Guadalcanal, Peleliu and

Okinawa during WWII. He retired from the Marine Corps Reserve in

1962 with the rank of Major.

While working for the Chicago

Tribune in Chicago, IL, in 1946 he met and married Alice McGuffey, a

nurse from Gun Lake, Michigan. She passed away October 10, 1998.

He is survived by his five

daughters, Catherine (Michael) Fruge of Crystal Mountain, MI;

Patricia Lynch of Marysville; Barbara (Charles) Lawrence of Lakeport;

Mary (Harry) Polemitis of Royal Oak and Jacqueline Oldham of Port

Huron; two sons, Daniel M. Lynch of Camp Verde, AZ and Matthew (Rita)

Lynch of Pittsburgh, PA; 13 grandchildren, Matt Fruge,Ashley Flynn,

Bridgette Hyde, Katharine Lynch, Heather Edwards,Danny Lynch, Alison

Lawrence, Tessa Ernst, Kevin Lawrence, Nick Polemitis, Christopher

Polemitis, Jill Oldham and Alicia Oldham and 3 great-grandchildren.

Also surviving is brother Robert, Jefferson of Wisconsin. His

parents and brothers George and Jack preceded him in death.

Coming to Port Huron in 1954, he

served as a teacher and coach of football, basketball and baseball at

St. Stephen High School from 1954-62. In 1962 he became Director of

Housing, Placement and Financial Aid at Port Huron Junior College

(now St. Clair County Community College). In 1971 he became Director

of Adult and Continuing Education at SCCCC, a position he held until

retirement in 1985.

He was founder of the Port Huron

Sports Hall of Fame and first chairman of its Board of Directors. He

was past president of the Port Huron Kiwanis Club. He initiated the

annual staff recognition program at SCCCC. He was a member of

Charles Hammond Post #8 of the American Legion and a member of the

Marine Corps League. He was a member of the old St. Stephen Athletic

Committee (The Dirty Six) and helped organize and produced the

annual St. Stephen Old Athlete picnic. He was a member of St. Joseph

Catholic Church. He loved to travel and visited each of the 50

states and Mexico, Canada, Ireland, England, the Caribbean and the

south Pacific. He was an ardent Green Bay Packer fan and watched

them play many times in many cities through the years, including the

1997 Super Bowl in New Orleans.

Funeral services will be 10am

Tuesday in St. Joseph Catholic Church. The Rev. Brian K. Cokonougher

will officiate. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Visiting hours are 5-8 pm Sunday

and 2-9 pm Monday in the Karrer Simpson Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers donations may

be given to the Old St. Stephen Athletic Committee or the Port Huron

Sports Hall of Fame.
