Olga Smith

April 8th, 1921 to February 27th, 2016

Olga Smith, 94, of Port Huron, died Saturday, February 27, 2016 surrounded by her family.

She was born April 8, 1921 in Trenton, Michigan to the late Frank and Julia Petrossi. She graduated from Port Huron High School in 1939. After graduation, Olga went to work as an Executive Secretary in the Advertising Department at Mueller Brass Co.

She married George M. Smith on May 29, 1947. They owned and operated Smith Grocery from 1946 to 1992. The business remained in the family until 2010.

Olga loved to learn. She was particular about grammar and spelling. She was also one of the first to tutor grade school children through the Port Huron Area School District. She loved looking at antiques, researching genealogy, and studying history and politics.

Olga was also known as a professional worrier, having it down to a science. She also had a fierce, spunky spirit right until the end. She even made sure she got her hair done the Friday before she died.

She is survived by her children, Michael Smith (Debora Hamlin), Ted Smith and Georgia (Daniel) Hedt; grandsons, Kyle (Taylor Yax) and Troy Smith; daughter-in-law, Deborah McAllister Smith; and many nieces, nephews and their families. She was preceded in death by her husband, George; siblings, Mary Ruddy, Leona Chevalier, Albert Petrossi and Irma Sheldon.

Visitation will be from 6-9 pm Wednesday and 2-9 pm Thursday in Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Friday, March 4, 2016 in Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home with visitation beginning at 10:00 am. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Old Newsboys, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Blue Water Area Humane Society.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to “Mom’s Angels” who made it possible for her to live her days as she wanted; DeeDee Sweet, Carole Kirby, Sona Hale, Michelle Perez, Donna Amey, Raychel Putney, Tammy Smith, Wendy Holmes and Tracie Kern.
