Donald Joseph Zgieb Sr.

May 5th, 1931 to March 10th, 2016
Donald Joseph Zgieb Sr., 84, local Port Huron businessman, went to his Father in Heaven on Thursday, March 10, 2016 with his loved ones at his side, after a courageous battle with multiple myeloma.

He was born May 5, 1931 in Buffalo, NY to the late George and Helen (Joseph) Zgieb. Don married Iona C. “Dolly” Luebben in 1954.

He was a 1949 graduate of St. Stephen Catholic High School and served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, where he was honorably discharged and received many medals.

He attended the University of Michigan and Wayne State University.

Over the years, Don owned and operated the Colony Bar, Satellite Bar, Gas Lite Restaurant Lounge, Big Daddy’s Pizza, Palm’s Krystal Bar and Restaurant, which he and his son, Don Jr. operated. Later he also operated D.Z. Auto LLC.

Don was a member of Port Huron Yacht Club, Black River Country Club, Port Huron Country Club, Elks Lodge BPOE #343, Charles Schoor VFW Post #796 and American Legion Charles Hammond Post #8.

He was an avid sailor, golfer, and owned and raced thoroughbred horses and loved going to the racetrack with Dr. Liam Gannan. He loved to deer hunt with his buddy, Buff Glombowski, both with a rifle and bow.

Don and his father, George Joseph Zgieb were contributing benefactors to the building of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. He loved and led a full life. He will live in the hearts of those who love him.

He is survived by his “Dolly”; his son, William M. Zgieb; grandchildren, Donald J. Zgieb II, William P. (Kelsey) Zgieb, Kelli C. (Brian) Rojek, Joshua Zgieb, Lacie Zgieb, Lindsey (Steve) McKinstry; several great grandchildren, the newest addition being, Anders Patrick Zgieb, who gave Don such joy the last days of his life. Also surviving are his cousin, Alex Zgieb, brother-in-law, Charles A. (Diane) Luebben; sisters-in-law, Shirley A. Rediker and Veronica E. Stulgis; and special friend, Charles D. Kimbell. He was preceded in death by his two beloved sons, George J. Zgieb II and Donald J. Zgieb Jr., two grandsons, William M. Zgieb Jr. and Nicholas G. Zgieb.

Private burial in Mt. Hope Cemetery has taken place.

A Memorial Mass and luncheon will be held and announced at a later date.
