Brenda Jean Stommel

March 12th, 1954 to March 24th, 2016
Brenda Jean Stommel, 62, of Port Huron, passed away Thursday, March 24, 2016, following recurring battles with cancer.

She was born March 12, 1954 to the late Julian and Beatrice Plaut and was a lifetime resident of Port Huron. She married George Stommel on November 16, 1979.

Brenda was a graduate of Port Huron High (Class of ’72), SC4, and the University of Michigan, with a bachelor’s degree in social work. She served as a social worker at Marwood Manor, then as a Probation Officer for the Michigan Department of Corrections, retiring from that position in July 2009.

Brenda practiced her social work skills daily, through a deep interest in the activities and concerns of a wide circle of friends and relatives, and her active role as a volunteer at McLaren - Port Huron Hospital and its Cancer Survivor Program.

She had limited enthusiasm for her husband’s love of boating. Her idea of a boat trip was either north to the State Park for some sunbathing or south to St. Clair for lunch at the Slide. She loved travel, and did so extensively in Europe, the Caribbean, the U.S., and looked forward to trips to the family time-share villa in Orlando.

She is survived by her husband, George; son, Brent (Danielle) Anter, two step-daughters, Jennifer (Tom) Tomasello, Tampa, FL and Julie Aliano, Chesterfield, MO; 20 grandchildren; sisters, Marsha (Ken) Powers, Sherman, TX, Marianne (Jim) Walters, Montgomery, TX; and brother, Don (Deb) Plaut, Port Huron; in-laws, Kenneth (Kathryn) Stommel Jr., Port Huron, Margo Ganson, Laguna Beach, CA, Robert (Theresa) Stommel, Naples FL, Adele Stommel, Farmington, MI and James (Kelly) Stommel, Port Huron; special niece, Madison Plaut; and best friend, Deb Morrison.

Visitation will be from 2 - 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, 2016 in the Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home and from 9 -10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Mary Catholic Church.

Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 30, 2016 in St. Mary Catholic Church. The Reverend Zbiginiew Zomerfeld will officiate.

Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to McLaren - Port Huron Hospital Foundation.
