James A Whipple
James Atlee Whipple, 80, of Emmett Twp., died Tuesday, June 21, 2016.
He was born July 12, 1935 in Stark County, Ohio to the late George W. and Esther Whipple. He married Carol J. Rausch on June 2, 1957 in Mineral City, Ohio. She died November 18, 2003.
Mr. Whipple graduated from Washington High School in Massillon, Ohio. He graduated with a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. He taught school for 30 years in Ohio and Port Huron, retiring in 1986.
Jim served with the United Church of Christ Board of Homeland Missions in the Ozarks and Green Mts. of Vermont in 1961-62. He was a member of the Port Huron Hospital Auxiliary and was named volunteer of the year in 2000 and was employed as Director of Volunteer Services, retiring in 2008. He was a member of Port Huron Hospital Foundation Beacon Society, served as co-chair of the Festival of Trees for two years, volunteered for the Red Cross Blood Center and was a member of NEA, OEA, MEA and PHEA. Jim was also a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Port Huron and most currently St. John’s Lutheran Church, Capac.
He is survived by his brother, David A. (Marjorie) Whipple of Maine; nephew, Mark Wayne of Ohio; special friends, Ronald and Joan Hartson, Ronald Jr. and Candace Hartson, Bruce Schashko; and many friends and neighbors.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Capac with visiting from 9 a.m. until the service time. The Rev. Sarah Flatt will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Burial Park, New Philadelphia, OH.
Memorials may be made to the Blue Water Humane Society.
