Phyllis Jean "P.J." Fleury

Phyllis Jean “P.J.” Fleury, 84, of Fort Gratiot, died Wednesday, June 22, 2016 in Port Huron.

She was born July 19 1931 in Port Huron to the late Wilbert L. and Hilda M. Fleury.

Phyllis was a graduate of St. Stephen High School, Port Huron, Mercy School of Nursing, Detroit, earned her BSN from Indiana University and her MSW in Clinical Social Work from Loyola University - Chicago. She served in the U.S. Navy Nurse Corp from October 22, 1962 until November 1, 1982, including a Vietnam tour aboard the USS Repose.

She worked as a Social Worker in Chicago for two years, later returning to Port Huron, where she worked as a Registered Nurse and Clinical Social Worker at Catholic Social Services, retiring in September 1993.

Phyllis enjoyed traveling, reading, gardening and her Poodles. Of all the titles she earned in her career in nursing and social work, her favorite title was Aunt P.J., to her many nieces and nephews.

She is survived by her siblings, Mary O’Donnell of Woodland Park, CO, W. Joseph (Joyce) Fleury of Columbus, OH, Yvonne “Bonnie” (Larry) Snowden, Pauline Deering, Dennis Fleury all of Port Huron, Annette (Patrick) McAuley of Blue Springs, MO and James (Deborah) Fleury of Kimball; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her four sisters, Evelyn Fleury, Vivian Rickett, Suzanne Nichols and Virginia Walker and four brothers, Paul, Daniel, Charles and Lawrence Fleury.

Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Friday in Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home.

Miss Fleury will lie in state at St. Mary Catholic Church 10 a.m. Saturday until the time of service.

A Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 25, 2016 in St. Mary Catholic Church. The Revered Zbigniew Zomerfeld will officiate.

Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Blue Water Area Humane Society or St. Mary Catholic Church.
