John R Szelog
John Richard Szelog, 91, of Port Huron, died July 6, 2016.
He was born July 10, 1924 in Smiths Creek to the late John J. and Catherine Szelog.
John served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of Charles Hammond American Legion Post #8 and a former member of the Charles Schoor VFW Post #796.
Mr. Szelog lived a very active life style and had a great sense of humor. He also enjoyed keeping fit and the comradery at Birchwood Athletic Club for many years. He was still working out way beyond his 80’s and was always there to lend a hand to help out.
He enjoyed spending time with his family and loved to be outdoors hunting, working in his yard and gardening with his neighbors.
He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Mildred G.; four children, John Paul (Martha) Szelog, Linda (Ted Jr.) Kearns, David R. Szelog and Susan D. Szelog; seven grandchildren, Rachel (Eric) Witter, Danielle (Don) Truscott Matthew (Siera) Kearns, John Matthew (Sherry) Szelog, Mike (Shannon) Szelog, David J. (Melissa) Szelog and Kelly (Sean) Brickner; ten great-grandchildren; his sister, Marie Saunders; and five nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by five siblings, Helen Toole, Josephine Aitken, Julia Salog, Frances Salog, and Frank S. Szelog.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 11, 2016 in Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home with visitation one hour prior to the service, Deacon Dennis Crimmins will officiate. Burial will be in St. Philip Neri Cemetery, Columbus Twp at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the American Legion Auxiliary of Charles Hammond American Legion Post 8.
