Helen Margaret Smith, 99, of Marysville, died Monday, September 26, 2016.

She was born June 27, 1917 in Port Huron to the late Joseph and Mary Vizi. She married Gordon C. Smith on June 1, 1940. He preceded her in death on October 13, 1993.

Helen was a basketball and softball standout at Marysville High School where she graduated in 1936. She loved spending her time watching birds, reading and completing crossword puzzles.

She is survived by her daughters, Sue Schmidt of Long Beach, MS, Linda DeRocher of Birmingham, AL, and Lisa (Scott) Jones of Port Huron; grandchildren, Raymond (Lu) Schmidt, III Pamela (David) Clifford, Kristen Schmidt, Carissa (Marc) Purvis, Mariah (Donnie) Strickland, Micah (Amanda) DeRocher, Leah (Tim) Hudgins, Matthew (Kristina) Jones and Alison (Rob) Christensen; great grandchildren, Kayla, Andrew, Anna, Everett, Chance, Ella, Malina, Rachel, Sarah, Benjamin, Nathan, Cameron and Cole; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Carle and Ann Lomasney; brothers, Frank and Joseph Vizi; and her son-in-law, Raymond Schmidt, Jr.

Visitation will be from 2-4 and 7-9 pm Thursday in the Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home. Helen will lie in state from 10:00 am until the time of the Funeral Mass at 11:00 am Friday, September 30, 2016 in St. Christopher Catholic Church, Marysville. The Reverend James Arwady will officiate. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Michigan or to St. Christopher Catholic Church.
