The U.S. Navy has recently identified the remains of a Michigan sailor killed in action aboard the U.S.S. Oklahoma during the attack on the U.S. Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on December 7, 1941, 76 years ago. MM1c Fred M. Jones will be returned to Port Huron for burial on his family’s plot in Lakeside Cemetery. The escorted casket will arrive via Detroit Metropolitan Airport and graveside military honors will be conducted under the auspices of the U.S. Navy at 1 PM on Saturday, May 20, 2017, at Lakeside Cemetery, 3663 - 10th Ave., Port Huron.
Fred was followed in death by his wife, Helen Jones Lamb; father, Felix Jones of North Lake, MI; a son, Jon Jones; a brother, Norman Jones; and a sister, Neta Jones Thompson Amis. Fred will be interred next to his sister in Lakeside Cemetery. He is survived by a daughter, Leilani Ronningen, a grand daughter, Helen Kellie Cosner, two great grandchildren, Danielle Lee Tyler and Chrystal Leanne Sperry, Great great-grandson Taylor Sperry and great-great granddaughter, Leanna Sperry, all of Seattle, Washington; and a grandniece, Sue Nichols of Burton, Michigan.
