Raymond Somogy Sr.
Raymond Paul Somogy Sr., 75, of Fort Gratiot, died Friday, December 15, 2017.
He was born March 7, 1942 in Port Huron, to the late Alexander and Ella Somogy. He married Mary C. Elliott on June 29, 1968 at St. Stephen Catholic Church.
Raymond graduated from Port Huron High School in 1960. He served in the U.S. Army as a Sergeant in the Military Police during the Vietnam War. He was a 1st Class Engineer at Detroit Edison, retiring after 35 years of service.
Mr. Somogy was a faithful member and usher at St. Mary Catholic Church and participated in Bible study. He served as an altar boy for the first Mass in the new church in 1955 and ministered at the St. Clair County Jail for 29 years.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Councils 11756 and 2521 and served as Past Grand Knight, Past Faithful Navigator and Chairman of the Chalice Committee.
He enjoyed blacksmithing, especially making knives and participating in cowboy shoots at the Blue Water Sportsman’s Club. He loved farming and enjoyed giving children tours on his farm at Chris’s Bunnies. He played the banjo, piano and guitar. He enjoyed traveling with his family and visited 49 states and Europe. He loved spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Mary C. Somogy; his children, son, Ray Jr. (Laura) Somogy, Susan (Stephen) Tetreau and Christine Somogy; four grandchildren, Mitchell, Emily and Amber Tetreau and Alex Somogy; special niece and nephew, Charlyn and Ed Breslin; brother-in-law, Andrew Langolf, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Norma and Ron Moeller; many nieces and nephews; cousins; and lifelong friend, Ronald Hill. He was preceded in death by his two sisters, Charleen Langolf and Marie Holburt.
Visitation will be 2-9 p.m. Sunday in the Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home. A Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. with a time of sharing to follow.
Mr. Somogy will lie in state at St. Mary Catholic Church on Monday, December 18, 2017 from 10 a.m. until the time of Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. The Reverend Zbigniew Zomerfeld will officiate.
The Rite of Committal will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted under the auspices of the United States Army and the St. Clair County Allied Veterans Honor Guard.
Memorials may be made to St. Clair County Right to Life or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
