Mathew "George" Mayer
Mathew “George” Mayer, 91, of Port Huron, died peacefully at home on Friday, September 14, 2018.
He was born November 14, 1926 in Harbor Beach to the late Michael and Elizabeth Mayer. He married Florence E. Crosbie on April 22, 1961 in St. Edward on the Lake Catholic Church.
Mathew served in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Sixth Division during World War II. During that time, he participated in the battles at Okinawa and was awarded two Purple Hearts.
He attended St. Joseph School and was a graduate of Port Huron High School. He was member of Holy Trinity Parish St. Joseph Catholic Church. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter #12, V.F.W. Charles Schoor Post #796 and the American Legion Charles Hammond Post #8.
Mathew is survived by his wife of 57 years, Florence; several nieces and nephews and his companion, Mercy. He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Gordon Mayer; four brothers and one sister.
Mathew will lie in state from 10 a.m. until the time of the Funeral Mass at 11a.m. on Thursday, September 20, 2018 in Holy Trinity Parish St. Joseph Catholic Church. The Very Reverend Salvatore Palazzolo, KHS will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
