Laverne John Schock

February 19th, 1922 to November 5th, 2018

Laverne J. Schock, 96, of Port Huron Township, died Monday, November 5, 2018.

He was born February 19, 1922 in Ruth, Michigan. He married Margaret M. Essenmacher on September 5, 1945 in St. Peter and Paul Church in Ruth, Michigan. She preceded him in death on June 3, 2013.

Laverne spent his life as a TV repairman, instrument technician for Mueller Brass Co. and an electrician for Wirtz Manufacturing.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1943 to 1945 in General Patton’s 3rd Army 80th Division. He was wounded January 21, 1945 during the Battle of the Bulge. He received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and many other military medals.

Laverne and Margaret met new friends as they attended the reunions of the 80th Division that met in a different state each year. They also traveled with the Division members to Lucerne, Germany where many had saved that city during the war.

They also traveled to Europe, took cruises and wintered in Florida for 30 years. Laverne really enjoyed gardening, hunting and was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus having been a member since 1941.

He is survived by his children, Ginny (Marty) Zimmer, Ron (Ellen) Schock, Jerry (Marianne) Schock, Dale (Kathleen) Norton-Schock and John (Sherry) Schock; 9 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and several sisters and brothers-in-law. He was preceded in death by his daughter, JoAnn Schock; and brothers, Floyd and Melvin Schock.

Visitation will be from 9:00 am until 11:15 am on Friday, November 9, 2018 in Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home followed by a procession to Holy Trinity Parish St. Stephen Catholic Church for the Funeral Mass at 11:30 am. The Reverend Zbigniew Zomerfeld will officiate.

The Rite of Christian Burial will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted under the auspices of the U.S. Army and the St. Clair County Allied Veterans Honor Guard.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Disabled American Veterans Chapter #12.
