Donald Ellis Sr
August 10th, 1938 to February 23rd, 2011
Donald F. Ellis, Sr, 72, died in Port Huron Hospital on Wednesday, February 23, 2011, surrounded by his family and friends after a courageous 13 year battle with Leukemia.
He was born August 10, 1938 in Port Huron. He married Roberta L. Richardson on August 13, 1960 in St. Marys Catholic Church in Port Huron.
Don served in the National Guard for 10 years, being discharged in 1964. He retired from Dunn Construction and Engineering and from the Iron Workers Local 25. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed hunting and spending time up north at his cottage. He also enjoyed watching NASCAR, the Red Wings and the Tigers.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Roberta L. Ellis of Ruby; his son and best friend, Don Ellis Jr (Verna Lozano) of Port Huron; sister, Helen Perkins of Port Huron; sister-in-law JoAnne Yarbrough of Port Huron; niece, Janice (Tom) Britz of Lexington; nephews, Dave Ellis (Irene Perez) of Fort Gratiot and Donald R. Ellis of New Mexico; several great nieces and nephews and his faithful Labrador, Brittany.
Don was preceded in death by his mother and step-father, Margaret and Elmer Deronde; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Mildred and Joseph Richardson; brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Joan Ellis; brother-in-law, Robert Perkins.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Marys Catholic Church, Port Huron. Rev. George Askar will officiate. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery. Military rites will be under the auspices of the St. Clair County Allied Veterans Council. Pallbearers will be Don Ellis Jr, Dave Ellis, Joe Wrubel, Bryan Wolff, Paul Zuker and Dave Minock.
Visiting hours are 2-5 & 7-9 p.m. Friday at Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home and from 10 a.m. until the service time Saturday at church.
Memorials may be made to the Blue Water Area Humane Society or the Port Huron Hospital Oncology Unit.
