Dr. Eugene F Grewe

October 18th, 1918 to December 28th, 2020

Dr. Grewe passed away after a brief illness on December 28, 2020 at the age of 102.

He honorably served his country in World War II, both stateside and in the European theater, as the commander of an army anti-aircraft battery. After the war, Professor Grewe earned his MA from the University of Detroit, and his PhD from the University of Michigan. He enjoyed a long and distinguished career in higher education, first at the University of Detroit where he taught literature, rhetoric, and composition for thirty years, and then at the University of Michigan-Dearborn (UMD) where he headed the freshman writing program. He was the co-author of The College Research Paper, (1947). He ended his career with a two-year stint as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at UMD and then several years as the special advisor to the Chancellor. Upon his retirement he was named Professor Emeritus by U of M.

In his retirement, Gene remained active in the community, serving as head of the lectors at St. Edward on the Lake Catholic Church, and as Secretary of the St. Clair County Council on Aging.

Gene is survived by his younger brother, Bernard Grewe, of California; and his children Mary (Joe) Abella, Eugene Jr (Barb), Charles (Sue), Barbara Grewe, and Kate Grewe; 10 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-six years, Elizabeth “Betty” Grewe, neé Vaughan; and grandson, Matthew Grewe.

The family plans to hold a celebration of Gene’s life at a later date.

The family has suggested memorial contributions be made to St. Edward on the Lake Catholic Church or The St. Clair County Council on Aging.
