John P Engelgau

May 1st, 1932 to March 3rd, 2021

John Peter Engelgau, 88, of Mount Clemens, formerly of Port Huron, died Wednesday, March 3, 2021.

He was born May 1, 1932 in St. Clair to the late Fauster and Magdeline Engelgau. He married Mary Ellin Baker on August 16, 1958 in Lansing, Michigan. She preceded him in death on April 6, 1999.

Mr. Engelgau was a graduate of St. Clair High School and Ferris State University College of Pharmacy, where he met his future wife. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. John worked as a pharmacist in the area for many years. After he retired, he volunteered for several years as a pharmacist at Our Lady of Guadalupe Center in Port Huron, serving those in need. He was an avid reader and a part of many book clubs. John enjoyed listening to jazz, golfing, and cycling, completing several Pedal Across Lower Michigan bike tours. He was an animal lover, who rescued several dogs in his lifetime.

John carried on his father’s tradition of vacationing at Fireside Inn on Grand Lake- rarely missing a year in his 88 years. That was his favorite vacation spot where he had many good friends. He was even featured on an episode of “Under the Radar” that was filmed at Fireside Inn, where he played the role of “Man at Salad Bar” and “Man on Porch”.

He is survived by four children, Steven (Ann) Engelgau, Jeanne (Pat) Healy, Linda (Scott) Land and Charlene (David) Durham; and four grandchildren, Kevin and Eric Land and Sydney and Maxwell Durham.
