Robert D. Kania, 70, and his wife, Laurie S. Bernath-Kania, 57, of Port Huron, passed away within hours of each other on Saturday, May 1, 2021, after a month-long illness.
Bob was born June 27, 1950 in Port Huron and was a life-long resident of the Blue Water Area. Laurie was born September 21, 1963 in Clawson, Michigan. They were married on February 21, 1997 in Richmond, Michigan.
Bob graduated in 1969 from Port Huron High School, where he excelled in wrestling. After high school, he went to work for Interstate Manufacturing, later moving on to Baker Electric, and finally working for Rochester Tire before retiring in 2019. In addition to his love of fishing, Bob was a familiar figure in Blue Water Area bowling leagues and was a diehard Red Wings and Lions fan!
Laurie graduated in 1981 from Clawson High School. She worked for many years as a unit secretary at Port Huron Hospital before becoming a dispatcher for the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department.
Bob is survived by his daughter, Rachel (Jason) Frantz; son, Steven Kania; brother, Ken (Shari) Kania: sisters, Margaret (Dee) Woodard and Aneta (Charles) Jansen; brother-in-law, Richard Dawson; grandchildren, Chelsey (BobbyJoe) McPike, Jessica Frantz and Jason Frantz, Jr; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Lawrence E. Kania; mother, Theresa D. Bassett; stepmother, Iva A. Kania; and sister, Linda Dawson. Laurie is survived by her sister, Darcy (Greg) Chambers; brother, Brett Bernath; nephew, Brandon Hison; and niece, Grace Bernath. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lavern and Beverly Ann Bernath.
