Dorothy L Turner

December 9th, 1938 to October 22nd, 2021

Dorothy Lorelei Turner, beloved mom, Gram, and aunt, passed away on Friday, October 22, 2021 at her home in Kimball, Michigan. She was 82 years old.

Dorothy was born in 1938 in Wales Township, Michigan, to the late Josephine and William Ginter. She grew up on a small country farm with her seven brothers and sisters, and told many stories of the fun they had there. Her early school years were spent in a one room schoolhouse, and she graduated from Memphis High School in 1956. She had many interests in high school including glee club, basketball, newspaper club, and librarian.

Dorothy loved helping people and spent many years working for the Port Huron Area School District as a secretary and a teacher's aide. She was always involved in school activities, and loved having kids around, which was a good thing because her house was often the gathering place, and most weekends and many summer nights there was an extra kid or two spending the night. Later, she worked for Physician's Health Care and Huron Medical Center and made many lasting friends there who were like family. To this day most of them refer to her as “Gram”. She and her late husband, William “Dick” Turner, were fixtures at the Bluewater Sportsman’s Club over the years, helping to run many shoots and activities there. She loved the outdoors, bonfires, yard work, and John Deere tractors. She loved being busy, always working on a project or three, and it took her several tries to actually retire. She had a soft spot for animals and had many pets over the years, most recently her “baby”, Winston, who is more like a furry child than a dog, and will stay in the family.

Mostly, though, she loved her family fiercely. Children, grandchildren, siblings, nieces and nephews, she was always there to help when needed. She cared for her husband during his long illness before he passed away.

Dorothy is survived by her children, Sandy Phillips Shinske (John), Steven Phillips (Debbie), Linda Phillips Glombowski, and Linda Stone (Laura); grandchildren, Sean Phillips, Nicole (Nick), Dylan Ciani (Katrina), Sam Stephenson (Laurence), Sarah Miller (Zach) and Erin Farnsworth; great granddaughter, Avery Miller; sisters, Phyllis Melat, Jeannette Leonard and Elaine Anderson; and many loved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband William “Dick” Turner; daughter, Kim Stephenson; brothers, Harold and William; and sisters, Marilyn and Donna.

Visitation will be held from 1-6 p.m. on Friday, October 29, 2021 in Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home. A memorial service will follow at 6:00 p.m. Celebrant Laurie Wilson will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be made to two of Dorothy’s favorite charities, The Salvation Army or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
