Bernice E Lund

Bernice Lund, 96, of Port Huron, went

home to be with the Lord on Friday, November

4, 2022.

She was born on November 28, 1925 on

the family farm in Taunton, Minnesota, the

second of six children.

Bernice was a “farm girl” at heart. Hard

work was part of her childhood and she carried

her work ethic into her adult life.

Bernice often told us stories about

growing up on the farm. She remembered

feeding the animals, cleaning the stalls,

gathering the eggs and driving a tractor. A

favorite story was told about the family going to

church riding in a sleigh pulled by horses. When

it was cold, hot irons wrapped in cloth provided

warmth for the family.

Bernice’s life included devotion to God

and her faith. She never missed church or Holy

Days and she reminded us all of how important

prayers and faith were. She said her rosary

daily.

Bernice demonstrated her love and faith

in many ways. She devoted many hours as a

volunteer at St. Stephen’s Church (later known

as Holy Trinity), often cleaning the church and

washing the altar cloths. She sewed baptismal

clothes for some of the babies’ christenings,

made cookies and zucchini bread for the church

bazaars, helped prepare and organize the food

for the “funeral gatherings”, worked at the

pancake breakfasts, took homemade meals to

the priests and was a regular on clean up

committees. Bernice was a life-long member of

the St. Anne’s Altar Society and The League of

Catholic Women. Outside of church, she

volunteered at the local soup kitchen and served

with Meals on Wheels. Bernice received the

Martin Luther King award given to a person

volunteering in the community.

Bernice met her true love, Richard C.

Lund, in Minnesota. After their marriage, they

traveled with their two children to different

areas of the country while Richard served in the

Border Patrol. Richard often helped Bernice

with her volunteer activities. When Richard

retired and was honored for his work, the

audience was told that Bernice earned the

nickname of St. Bernice.

She is survived by her son, Richard D.

(Mary) Lund; daughter, Janet (Patrick) Mullins;

four grandchildren, Courtney Lund

Spangenberg; Richard R. (Elizabeth) Lund,

Kristen Mullins and Matthew Mullins; two great

grandchildren, Desmond Spangenberg and Ava

Mullins; brother-in-law Francis“Mac”

McMahon, sisters Lucy (Charles) Friend, Irene

(Donald) Swetala, brother Anton Fier Jr. and

sister-in-law Betty Rae (Elmer) VanMoorlehem.

She was preceded in death by her husband,

Richard; sisters Dorothy McMahon and Louise

Fier and sister-in-law Anne Fier.

We were blessed with Bernice’s love for

close to 97 years. She was many things to many

people and the world was a better place because

of her. She led by example, giving of herself

with love and faith.

Bernice’s family will come together to

honor her life in the spring of 2023.
