Mary Ellen Sweeney

December 5th, 1929 to March 11th, 2023

Mary Ellen Sweeney, 93, of Port Huron Township, died on Saturday, March 11, 2023 after a short illness. She was born on December 5, 1929 in Emmett, Michigan to the late Edward and Nellie (Foley) Cameron. She attended Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic School and graduated from St. Stephen High School in 1947.

After high school she began working at the Department of Welfare and then later in life worked part-time at the Maplethorpe Insurance Agency. She married William D. Sweeney on June 26, 1954 and together they raised six children in their sixty-eight years of marriage; he preceded her in death on June 9, 2022.

Mary Ellen enjoyed baking, gardening, reading, camping, and spending time with her family. She was a lifelong member of Holy Trinity Parish teaching Religious Education, and volunteering her time in various other capacities at her church including the St. Vincent DePaul Society.

She is survived by her children; daughters, Mary Jean (Larry) Jackson, Teresa Sweeney, Joanna (Jack) Durnbaugh; sons, William Jr. (Kelly) and Matthew (Laura) Sweeney; son-in-law Mike Clem, Sr.; grandchildren, Eve (Tonilyn) Jackson, Shannon Jackson, Elena, Julia Durnbaugh, Vanessa, Sydney, Benjamin Sweeney; step-grandson, Michael Clem II; great-granddaughters, Lillian and Violet Hilliker; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill and daughter Barbara; her parents; siblings, Margaret (Bernard) Metsker and Jean Cameron; and brother and sister-in-laws, Lawrence (Margaret) Sweeney, Alex (Eleanor) Sweeney, Joseph (Joan) Sweeney and Mary Ann (Patrick) Quain.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, March 14, 2023 at the Karrer-Simpson Funeral Home from 3-5 and 6-8 p.m., the Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 15, 2023 in Holy Trinity Parish St. Stephen Catholic Church with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. The Reverend Joseph Gagnon will officiate assisted by Deacon Dennis Crimmins.

Burial will be in Kenockee Cemetery, Emmett, Michigan.
