Betty J Payne

Betty Jane Payne, 86, of Port Huron, died Sunday, December 3, 2023.

She was born November 20, 1937 in Port Huron to the late Lawrence and Anna Bowen. She married Leslie G. “Les” Payne on October 24, 1959 in Port Huron. He preceded her in death on July 25, 2020 after 60 years of marriage.

Betty was employed as an LPN with Mercy Hospital for 30 years prior to her retirement in 2000. She loved the sunshine, so being in Florida with her nieces was her “happy place”. She was very witty and also had lots of fun going to family events. Holidays and birthdays were special times, when she was known as the cake-baker and chocolate chip cookie maker extraordinaire. Most of all, Betty loved her family, often vacationing and spending time with them. She was a long-time member of St. Mary Catholic Church.

She is survived by three children, Karen (Charlie) Keen, Lynn (Dean) Jolly and Steven (Anne) Payne; 10 grandchildren, Michael, Andrew, Tim, Daniel, Kristina, Zachary, Hannah, Mitchell, Katie and Rachel; three great grandchildren, Theo, Phoebe and Riley; sister, Judy Murray; sister-in-law, Charlene Bowen; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Kristine; sister, Angela (Mike) O’Donnell; brother, Lawrence Bowen; and brother-in-law, Robert Murray.

Private graveside services were held in Mt. Hope Catholic Cemetery, Port Huron.
